Ag. Vice-Chancellor Pays Working Visit to Ministry of Energy and Green Transition

The Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Prof. Denis Worlanyo Aheto, has paid a working visit to the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition to explore strategic interventions to advance the University's Green Sustainability Agenda and improving energy efficiency across the University.

Prof. Aheto led a delegation from the University to hold discussions with the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, on practical and cost-effective solutions to address the University's energy needs while promoting environmental sustainability.

During the meeting, the Acting Vice-Chancellor appealed to the Minister to support the installation of solar power systems and solar-powered streetlights across critical academic areas of the University. He also requested assistance to facilitate the completion of the stalled Institute of Oil and Governance Building Project and sought the Ministry's intervention in implementing

Cabinet's decision on electricity bill exemptions for critical public institutions. Additionally, Prof. Aheto appealed for support to strengthen the University's working relationship with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Responding to the requests, Hon. Jinapor reaffirmed the Ministry's commitment to supporting UCC's sustainability drive through the adoption of renewable energy solutions. He announced plans to replace the University's existing streetlights with modern solar-powered lighting systems to improve security and visibility across the campus.

The Minister further indicated that lecture halls, laboratories and other critical academic and administrative facilities would progressively be powered through solar and hybrid energy systems as part of the Ministry's commitment to ensuring reliable, cost-effective and environmentally friendly energy for tertiary institutions. He also pledged to engage the Ministries

of Finance and Education to explore the provision of energy-efficient lighting solutions for universities and other higher education institutions nationwide.

Present at the meeting were the Registrar, Gideon Enoch Abbeyquaye, Esq.; the Acting Director of Finance, Mr. George Amfo-Antiri; the Head of the Electricity Section, Mr. Benedict Addo-Yeboa; and the Administrative Secretary to the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Mr. Alfred Ghartey. Also present were Dr. Shafic Suleman, representatives of the Electricity Company of Ghana, and directors from the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition.
