CEGRAD Trains Facilitators

The Centre for Gender, Research, Advocacy and Documentation (CEGRAD) is organising a four-day workshop for student facilitators in University.

The facilitators comprising representatives of the various halls of residence will serve as liaison officers who will provide counselling services and also educate students on issues of relationship and sexual harassment.

Participants would be taken through Basic Concepts in Gender, Gender Issues and Social Life on Campus, Facilitation Skills, Sexual Harassment in Ghana and at UCC, Developing Relationship Skills, and Gender(In)equality, Communication and Consent.

Opening the workshop, the Director of CEGRAD, Dr. Genevieve Adukpo, said the workshop was aimed at equipping them with the requisite knowledge to enhance their understanding on relationship. She noted that the participants were key stakeholders to reach out to the entire student populace.

Dr. Adukpo noted that CEGRAD would organise a similar workshop for national service personnel to assist as trainers. She was hopeful that participants would gain practical understanding of the topics to be treated at the workshop so that they could make positive impact on the lives of their colleagues.

The Co-ordinator of Advocacy and Outreach, Dr. Georgina Yaa Oduro, said the training would equip them to become good facilitators and acquire a life-long skill for life and their future relationships. She said their role as facilitators would enrich their curriculum vitae and create opportunities for them after their education.

Taking participants through Basic Concepts in Gender, Dr. Oduro explained that gender referred to the socio-cultural meaning associated with males/females. She indicated that gender was a product of social organisation construed through social interaction stressing that “gender roles vary from one society to the other and changes as society progresses”.
