Dept. Of Sport and Exercise Science Interacts with University of Limerick, Ireland

Faculty members of the Department of Sport and Exercise Science of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) have interacted with officials from the Department of Physical Education and Sport Sciences of the University of Limerick, Ireland.

The delegation from the two departments engaged in warm and fraternal discussions with each of the departments making presentations of activities in their universities.

The discussions touched on key sport and exercise science matters, including efforts to make their students competitive after graduation.

A Lecturer in Coaching and the Course Director of BSc Sport and Exercise Sciences Programme, University of Limerick, Dr. Ian Sherwin, gave a brief history about the University, while a lecturer at the Department of Sport and Exercise Science-UCC, Dr. Stephen Anim, took the audience through the history of the University of Cape Coast.

Dr. Sherwin said the origin of the Department of Physical Education and Sports Sciences (PESS) was traced to the founding of the National College of Physical Education (NCPE) in 1971 to meet the national need to prepare physical education students to teach in schools at post primary level.

He said his department was building on its previous achievements and successes to become a key element of the University of Limerick for the next 50 years and the academic face of Ireland's sporting campus.

For his part, Dr. Anim emphasised that the department equipped students with transferable skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and digital literacy, which are increasingly sought after by employers.

Through hands-on projects, collaborative research, and industry partnerships, he said students were provided with these essential skills, preparing them to thrive in the Sport and Exercise Science world.
