School of Medical Sciences Holds 12th White Coat Ceremony

The School of Medical Sciences has held their annual White Coat Ceremony for 116 Medical students at the SMS Auditorium. The White Coat Ceremony is a rite of passage for medical students, and was created by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation in 1993. During the ceremony, a white coat is placed on each student’s shoulders and the  Hippocratic Oath is recited, signifying their entrance into the medical profession.

Speaking on half of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Issac Galyoun, Provost of the College of Distance Education, encouraged the medical students to work with all seriousness and treat patients as family and not as strangers.

In all, one hundred and sixteen (116) medical students were dressed with white coats and encouraged to manage their work load and be extremely organized. Emphasis was placed on team work which is an extremely important component of the work of a medical doctor.

The ceremony was graced by the presence of Professor Isaac Galyoun, who represented the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sebastian Eliason (Dean, SMS), Professor Paul Kwame Nyame (Chairman, Ghana Medical and Dental Council Board), Prof. Harold Amonoo-Kuofi (Former Provost, College of Health and Allied Sciences, UCC), and Dr. Eric Ngyedu (CEO, CCTH).
