TWAS Donates Research Equipment to Laser and Fibre Optics Centre (lafoc)

The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), via the International Centre for

Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy, under its Research Grants Scheme

(RGS), has donated laboratory research equipment and chemicals worth 8,000

USD to the Laser and Fibre Optics Centre (LAFOC) in the School of Physical

Sciences of the University of Cape Coast.

The equipment included a UV-Vis double beam Spectrophotometer, Sonicator, and

Cholesterol donated by the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS).

The grant was made possible through the Swedish International Development

Cooperation Agency (SIDA), which was led by Dr Jerry Opoku-Ansah, a Lecturer

at the Department of Physics, and a Researcher at LAFOC.

Dr Jerry Opoku-Ansah explained that the equipment had cross-boundary

applications in the natural, medical and allied health sciences. “The UV-Vis

spectrophotometer with the double-beam optical system has diverse applications,

including general research, pharmaceutical, biochemical and clinical laboratory

use, new material development, and quality control. The Sonicator is a compact

and practical ultrasonic processor ideal for standard cell disruption and other small

volume applications,” he indicated

He expressed appreciation to The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and the

Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) for the kind

gesture.

Present at the ceremony was the Provost of the College of Humanities and Legal

Studies. Prof. Francis Amuquandoh.
