UTAG-UCC Supports Students of Mepe

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), has provided financial support to UCC students from Mepe who were affected by the flooding caused by the Akosombo Dam spillage.

The gesture forms part of the Association's corporate social responsibility to mitigate the long-term impact of the disaster on the academic development of the beneficiary students.

In mid-October 2023, the Akosombo Dam water spillage caused excessive flooding in the Lower Volta Basin and Mepe in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region was one of the hardest hit communities. The floods resulted in the loss of key infrastructure such as roads hampering emergency responses as well as isolating communities.

The President of UTAG-UCC, Dr. Jerry Opoku Ansah, presenting an unspecified amount of money to the students, said UCC lecturers would always stand by their students in difficult times.

He said the donation represented a continuation of the corporate culture of UTAG-UCC giving back to society to lessen the burden on students.

Dr. Ansah also expressed excitement over his colleagues' ability to rise to the call to support a worthy cause.

On her part, the Vice- President of UTAG-UCC, Dr. Joana Dodoo-Arhin, echoed similar sentiments and encouraged the students to take their studies seriously to climb the academic ladder.

Receiving the amounts individually, the beneficiary students expressed gratitude to UTAG-UCC for the kind gesture and appealed to corporate institutions, and philanthropists to come to their aid.
